I got my first tattoo when I was fifteen, it is a rose with two names. I got it in memory of a little girl whom I adored, and also my brother, who both passed away three days apart. I regret getting this tattoo because I was young and naive and headstrong. i didn’t research the artist and didnt even know that it was illegal. The result is a tattoo that is quite poorly done. I am still attached to it for the reasons aforementioned though. Then I began a tattooing apprenticeship and my whole world opened to art and the myriad of possibilities available in tattooing. I got a tattoo that represented myself and my beliefs. Then I got a handprint of the little girl who passed. I placed two doves on my chest with the words “Flight and Fall, In Deo Speramus (In God we trust).” I also added a half sleeve, which you can see on my profile picture is of a blue buddha. He is my artistic interpretation of the Boddhisattva Avalokiteshvara, who is the buddha-to-be of mercy and compassion. Through his crown are the initials of my eight siblings (in elegant ancient mayan). This was my way of carrying the people I love with me for all eternity. I recently added chess pieces to my foot in memory of my dad, which you can view below if you wish. All of my tattoo’s I chose because they are things I am proud to carry with me for my entire life. They run deeper than a phase, or a passion. They are part of my inner self, that through a very talented artist (my boss) I was able to apply to my outer self as well. A lot of people regret their tattoo’s and as someone who works in the industry it saddens me greatly. If people take more time to decide on their artwork and THOROUGHLY research their tattoo artist’ ability prior to wearing the artwork for life, their will be a lot less remorse over poorly made decisions. Also I have found that people focus far too much on cost instead of quality. Best of luck with your choice, please keep us posted. :-)

People get all kinds of tattoos, I myself want to get a tattoo and have been brainstorming a lot so I was curious what some of you had to say about how you got your tattoo/tattoos.

I want a tattoo across my rob cage and I was wondering how long it would take to heal and if it would effect my training for middle distance events. If it does I will wait for my tattoo till summer.

When I’ve gotten tattoos, it honestly doesn’t hurt that bad afterwards. Maybe a minor sunburnt feel. I have one on my side and it was tender, but nothing that affected daily life. With your training and events, you will want to make sure that you clean it really well after each workout and apply a topical cream, as sweat may get it infected.

Good luck!

I just moved to West Babylon, NY today from Connecticut.

Anyone have any suggestions on where to get my first tattoo on Long Island?
It’s going to be a fairly large octopus and I want very vibrant color.
What are the best tattoo shops on the island as far as cleanliness, customer service, and detail of tattoos?

Tattoos are permanent and I want to be sure I am making the best choice.
Also: How far in advance to I have to book an appointment? And how expensive is it?

Wow thats strange. I litrally had that tattoo planned for myself. I had a different font, but i took it to the tattooist and they said personally they wouldnt bother if it was them, because they dont last long on your finger. I was planning on getting it on my wedding finger, and when i found out it’d fade quickly i was rather annoyed because i was so excited -.-
Have you considered back of the neck? Wrist? somewhere you know that its not going to fade, overwise you’d go through the pain for nothing and you’d have waisted your money. I’ve had 4 tattoos, so i’d recommend not to bother with any numbing cream if you were considering. Its pointless, and i stopped using it after the first one -.-
Anyway, good luck! Im sure you’ll find something nice. Im not saying dont get the tattoo, but just keep in mind that it likely wont last long. Unless of course your happy to go back every now and then to get it redone :)

In the near future, I’m definately thinking about getting a couple tattoos. Tattoos that actually have meaning to me.. And, of course, now days, theres lots of people who are against them. Even though there are people out there who are against tattoos, dont you think if you have a tattoo thats actually meaningful, it will take away from the negative and bring back something positive. Will the tattoos be more attractive or unattractive?

I can totally undertstand where you are coming from.
I’m 39yrs old, and just 2 weeks ago, I got my first tattoo done, the very next day I got my second tattoo done. Both have meanings behind them. the 3rd one will come during my Christmas break.
For years, I have been talking about getting a tattoo, but I did not want to rush and just get anything put on my skin. I have looked and looked at different websites and books to find what i really want or find some ideas to improve my designs, but never was satisfied with what I have found. So I wasn’t to bothered to about getting it done straight away.

2 weeks ago, i walked into a tattoo studio, showed them what I had…they improved it and got both done.

I have my daughter’s name on my forearm with a fantastic (great) banner with lots of detail and grey wash and I have a Maltese Cross on my right shoulder. Maltese Cross, because I was born in Malta.

*Disclaimer* If you’re unimaginative or have to be the one commenting with ‘I would never get a tattoo/tattoos are dumb’ blah blah-Please bug off!

Imagine you’re getting a tattoo of a character from Greek Mythology–What would you get and why? What would it look like?
Any thing from any story or any character…

Probably one of the goddesses like Artemis of Athena, if not then a sphinx because I love how they trap people with words and riddles

I want to get this same quote and the font as matching tattoos with my brother. How much would this cost on our wrist?

it shouldnt cost too much. its an easy enough tattoo in a common area so i wouldnt pay over 80 for it.

I guess its what you would call body reclamation.. Anyways, I wanted to get a portrait on my forearm. My scars are pretty old (4 years and now just trying to live a happy life, stress and scar-free) and they arent so much raised, the scars are more so whiter than the rest of my skin. So its just a color issue. I was thinking of getting a portrait done and I understand that if I went the typical original route the color of the scars would poke through so my plan is to have the portrait completed in different tones of either blue or purple. Heres an example by Mike DeVries

Here are my questions:
Typically, when getting a tattoo to eliminate the appearance of scars – would a portrait be suitable?
- Would the heavy shading and the use of the colors eliminate the scars?
-And if you were a tattoo artist would you attempt it?

I have a tattoo artist in mind and just wanted to get a general opinion before I inquiry. The word “eliminate” doesn’t seem right because I know that in a certain light ppl might notice the scars – will it “diminish” the appearance of scars is more like it..

People have tattoos put over stretchmarks and its fine.. like people with big arms or some on their back and the stretchmarsk can be close to half an inch long.. Anyways, it might be tough for the artist to tat well over anything textured differently, they will generally stretch the skin out with their hand anyways so it might reduce the texture when theyre doing the tat.. it should be fine.. yes an artist would be able to do so.. i woul djust focus on finding an artist you like
